Best Affordable Family Vacations in the U.S. for Summer

Best Affordable Family Vacations in the U.S. for Summer

Planning affordable family vacations often feels like solving a puzzle. You want a place that keeps the kids entertained, offers a bit of relaxation for the adults, and doesn’t completely drain your savings account. Finding that perfect balance between fun, fresh air, and a reasonable price tag is the ultimate parenting win. But where are these sweet-spot destinations that make everyone happy?

We wanted to find out too, so we analyzed 102 destinations across America, including larger cities and summer hotspots. To determine each location’s ‘affordable fun’ score, we considered the following factors:

  • Accommodation cost (20% of overall score)

  • Ice cream shops and snack bars, per capita (10% of overall score)

  • Kid-friendly activities, per capita (20% of overall score, equally weighted)

    • Mini golf

    • Arcades

    • Bowling alleys

  • Premium attractions  (20% of overall score, equally weighted)

    • Zoos and aquariums

    • Water parks

    • Amusement parks

  • Outdoor Recreation access (30% overall score, equally weighted)

    • Park land

    • Walk score

    • Bike score

    • Hiking access

    • Beaches

    • Lakes

The locations were rated on a 1-100 scale based on their performance across all categories. This means that if a location was only strong in beach access, its outdoor recreation score would drop because it wasn’t well-rounded for maximum kid entertainment.

Ready for some affordable family-friendly vacation inspiration? Here’s what the numbers said.

Key Findings

  • The Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Gatlinburg, TN, scored first overall for the most fun and affordable family travel destination, followed by Lake George, N.Y., and the Outer Banks, N.C.

  • Martha’s Vineyard, MA, is the top destination for families who love the outdoors, thanks to its numerous public beaches and hiking trails.

  • El Paso, TX, is the most affordable destination for families to visit this summer, with the lowest average vacation rental prices.

  • The Great Smoky Mountains National Park also tops the list for kids' entertainment, with numerous arcades, mini-golf courses, and bowling alleys.

  • As no surprise, Orlando, FL, tops the list for premium attractions, as the city features many amusement parks, water parks, zoos, and aquariums.

1. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Gatlinburg, TN

Affordable Fun Score: 83.7/100

Gatlinburg is the No. 1 best affordable family vacation destination in the U.S.

When it comes to keeping the whole family smiling, Gatlinburg and the surrounding Great Smoky Mountains steal the show. This destination tops our list with an affordable fun score of 83.7 for the sheer volume of kid-friendly entertainment and outdoor fun packed into one incredibly scenic area.

If your crew is on the more active side, Gatlinburg is the destination for you. Just south of Pigeon Forge, this charming Tennessee town is overflowing with arcades, mini-golf courses, and bowling alleys—scoring highest across all destinations for kids' entertainment opportunities.

You can spend the morning hiking through the breathtaking national park, and the afternoon racing go-karts or trying to win a stuffed bear at Frannie Farkles. When the kids get tired, load up the car with cozy blankets and take the Roaring Fork Motor Trail. They’ll nap while you unwind.

Gatlinburg’s high score is backed by its affordable accommodations, which were weighted heaviest in our scoring system. While the area loses a few points on walkability compared with big cities, it more than makes up for it with excellent outdoor access and ample ways to play.

2. Lake George, NY

Affordable Fun Score: 68.6/100

Lake George is the No. 2 best affordable family vacation destination for summer travel

Tucked away in the Adirondack Mountains, Lake George is a classic summer retreat that has been charming families for generations. The Northeast destination ranks as the second most fun and affordable family destination this summer, with a score of 68.6.

Want a slow day? Enjoy the numerous public beaches, tube down a lazy river, or take a scenic steamboat ride. Ready for action? The area boasts excellent access to water parks, old-school amusement rides, and the Great Escapes theme park. There are also lots of dining options, many overlooking the lake. We recommend Moose Tooth Grill to please the whole family, picky eaters and all.

Even with higher-than-average accommodation costs, it remains a relatively budget-friendly place where days end with sticky ice cream hands and exhausted, happy kids.

And at the end of a long day on the river, we suggest putting on your matching family PJs and going stargazing.

3. Outer Banks, NC

Affordable Fun Score: 63.5/100

Outer Banks is the No. 3 best affordable family vacation destination for families

If your idea of a perfect affordable family vacation involves sand, surf, and even wild horses roaming the shoreline, the Outer Banks is calling your name. This string of barrier islands provides a laid-back, wallet-friendly coastal experience that landed it third overall.

The Outer Banks, also known as OBX, scored exceptionally well for its endless stretches of public beaches and accessible nature trails. You can also climb historic lighthouses, visit the aquarium, or head to a nearby waterpark for exciting slides and interactive fun

It lost some points for having fewer indoor attractions, such as arcades. This means that while there is a lot to do on sunny days, options may be limited if the sunny weather turns to rain.

All in all, the Outer Banks is less about flashy theme parks and more about climbing majestic sand dunes, watching for wildhorses, and flying kites in the ocean breeze.

4. Barnstable, MA

Affordable Fun Score: 58.9/100

Barnstable is the No. 4 best affordable family vacation destination

There’s something special about Cape Cod, and Barnstable sits right at the heart of it. This coastal Massachusetts gem unites natural exploration with quaint town activities, dominating the outdoor recreation category to climb into fourth place overall.

Your family can spend the morning searching for crabs in the tidal pools, the afternoon biking along beautifully paved trails, and the evening grabbing a casual seafood dinner.

If the sun isn’t on your side, check out Ryan’s Ten Pin Eatery at Cape Cod Mall, then head to Whydah Pirate Museum. Located in neighboring West Yarmouth, the kid-friendly museum is home to the world's only authenticated pirate treasure, pulled right from the ocean floor.

If sunburned kids are burnt out on beach days, you may struggle to find an abundance of kid-focused entertainment options, like arcades or amusement parks.

And don’t forget, Martha’s Vineyard is just a one-hour fast ferry ride away! For extra activity, bring your bikes for an afternoon on the island.

Barnstable lost points when it came to premium attractions, lacking a ‘big’ activity like zoos or theme parks.

5. Myrtle Beach, SC

Affordable Fun Score: 53.7/100

Myrtle Beach is the No. 5 best affordable family vacation destination for kids and activities

Rounding out our top five is the famously vibrant Myrtle Beach. Scoring 53.7 out of 100, this South Carolina hotspot is a powerhouse of kid-centered fun.

Beyond the stretch of sandy coastline, the area is packed with sprawling water parks, but lost points when it comes to aquarium, zoo, and amusement park density.

Still, the Southeast stay has enough mini-golf courses to play a different one every day of the week.

It offers a high-energy, classic beach-vacation vibe where “I’m bored” can quickly turn into “Can we do that again?”

While it shines for entertainment and beach access, it loses points for higher peak‑season prices, making it less affordable than some higher‑ranked destinations.

The Best Destinations for Nature-Loving Families

For families happiest exploring the outdoors, these three destinations offer the ideal mix of scenery, fresh air, and space to roam.

With its beaches, coastal trails, and postcard-worthy views, Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard off the coast of Massachusetts stands out as a favorite for nature lovers.

Just a ferry ride away, and next up on the list is Barnstable on Cape Cod. Covering about 60 square miles, it sits between Cape Cod Bay to the north and Nantucket Sound to the south, with shoreline access, walking paths, and picturesque village centers that invite you to spend the whole day outside.

On the West Coast, Laguna Beach completes the trio. This seaside town blends rugged coastal trails with sandy coves and ocean overlooks, offering a variety of ways for families to enjoy the outdoors without straying far from town.

The Best Destinations if Affordability Is Your Top Priority

Budget is often the deciding factor when booking a family trip. If you’re looking to stretch your vacation dollars as far as possible, you might want to look toward Texas.

El Paso takes the crown as the most affordable city for families to visit this summer. The city features the lowest average vacation rental prices in our study. Best of all, “budget‑friendly” doesn’t mean boring. El Paso still offers plenty to do, from hands-on fun at the La Nube STEAM Discovery Center to animal encounters and splash areas at the zoo.

Choosing an affordable home base like El Paso leaves you with extra funds for local dining, attractions, and family experiences.

Hot on its heels, Tampa, FL, and Phoenix, AZ, also rank among the most affordable picks. Tampa offers easy access to beaches and family attractions, while Phoenix stands out for its zoos, desert parks, and kid-focused activities—all without hefty price tags.

The Destinations Most Likely to Entertain Kids

Keeping kids entertained can make or break a family trip. Our research ranked these destinations among the best for days that practically plan themselves.

In the Great Smoky Mountains National Park area, with Gatlinburg at its center, families can move easily between outdoor exploration and classic attractions, all within a scenic setting.

The Outer Banks brings a slower pace, where beach time stretches into the afternoon. Children can participate in both active and low-key outdoor activities. Myrtle Beach, on the other hand, feels more lively, with bright attractions and a steady stream of things to do that can keep families busy from morning to evening.

Together Is The Best Destination

At the end of the day, it’s not the destination that matters most; it’s the time spent together. The laughter, the adventures, and the little moments that become lasting memories.

As you pack your suitcase, be sure to bring some comfy Little Sleepies daywear and sleepwear for the whole family. Having a few go-to outfits that can handle both downtime and activity makes travel days a lot easier.

Soft, breathable options like lightweight sets are especially nice after long days out, while something a bit more durable from our Play collection works best for kids who are constantly on the move. If you enjoy leaning into the fun of family trips, matching pajamas can add a simple but memorable touch to your evenings together.

But a family getaway is about more than what you bring or where you go. It’s the connection built along the way and the stories you’ll look back on again and again.

Methodology

To determine the most family-friendly and affordable summer destinations in the U.S., we analyzed 102 of America’s largest cities and top summer destinations. We evaluated them across a wide range of factors related to outdoor access, kid-friendly activities, and overall affordability.

To measure access to green space, we used data from the Trust for Public Land to assess park acreage. Walkability and bikeability were evaluated using Walk Score. To capture access to family attractions, we used the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to identify accredited locations, AllTrails for hiking opportunities, and EPA data for nearby beaches. We also incorporated U.S. Census Bureau data to count water parks, amusement parks, mini-golf courses, arcades, bowling alleys, and ice cream shops. Accommodation affordability was estimated using Airbnb pricing data.

To create our overall affordable fun Score, we standardized each metric on a scale from 1 to 100, and applied specific weights, prioritizing accommodation affordability (20%), alongside major kid-friendly categories like ice cream shops (10%) and various entertainment venues (6.66% each).
